Your Opportunity

One Permanent Full Time Position.

Capital Power is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our York Energy Centre team in the role of O&M Lead/ Battery Storage System Site Lead.

As a direct report to the Plant Manager, O&M Lead/ Battery Storage System Site Lead is responsible for leading and coaching the team and helping all plant staff to develop their skills in reliability and optimal operations and maintenance practices. They also supervise the daily operation’s tasks, ensure environmental compliance and make sure that the facility runs safely, reliably, and economically according to the relevant laws, corporate policy, and best practice.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Developing departmental goals from performance goals.
  • Updating the maintenance component of the O&M Plan based on sound asset management planning.
  • Supporting the Plant Manager in ensuring the equipment reliability and capacity is achieved to meet the plant commitments.
  • Overseeing the storage cell life cycle management of the Battery Storage Systems (2-year life cycle).
  • Supporting the development of long-range maintenance plans for major equipment based on sound engineering practices and OEM recommendations for the plant life cycle.
  • Supporting the Plant Manager in the completion of all facility reporting requirements including environmental, safety, budgeting, and plant performance.
  • Overseeing and managing the proper input of bids into the IESO system tools and ensuring that these comply with Capital Power’s bid strategy.
  • Ensuring that the IESO dispatches are received and acted upon in a fashion that maintains contract compliance with the YEC PPA.
  • Providing input and support in the development of the annual budget and annual operating plans.
  • Translating company/plant goals into Group tactical plans and goals.
  • Ensuring systems are in place to monitor inventory levels of chemicals and consumables related to operations and ensuring adequate supplies are available to maintain operations.
  • Ensuring work group activities are performed on time and within budget through effective planning, organizing, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities and utilization of resources.
  • Managing the BESS LTSA and coordination with OEM for all maintenance activities.
  • Ensuring the appropriate shared services agreement cost allocations are accounted for in regard to the BESS.
  • Directing subordinate personnel in outage planning and scheduling of maintenance to assure thorough investigation of each request, determining material needs and other prerequisites such as equipment/tools needed, workforce needs, and procedures required.
  • Delegating responsibility for tasks and decisions and manages expectations of others.
  • Managing or executing all non-routine/out of LTSA scope YEC BESS maintenance activities.
  • Monitoring and optimizing plant performance.
  • Ensuring that staff understand the inventory system and that all goods used and received are recorded in the system and allocated between YEC and YEC BESS.
  • Maintaining plant specific emergency response, environmental and safety procedures and processes.
  • Working with Corporate Compliance to ensure compliance with all NERC/CIP and ISO rules and standards for both YEC and YEC BESS.
  • Ensuring technician’s quotes and jobs continue while technicians are on their scheduled days off
  • Coordinating and planning activities associated with the BESS LTSA including major maintenance planning on covered equipment along with the OEM.
  • Striving to maintain and improve relationships with community groups and residents to understand concerns and liaison with Plant Manager on issues.
  • Supporting in the develop and implementation of facility training programs for the operations personnel including cross training of facility staff to create a more flexible and productive plant environment.

What you will bring to the role:  

Education:

  • Completed degree, First Class Operator Certification, or completion of a 2-year technical college/school program related to plant operations or maintenance.
  • Other equivalencies including a Journeyman Trade Certification may be considered with significant plant O&M management experience.

Skills and Experience:

  • 4 to 6 years related experience leading operations and maintenance staff at a power generation site; preferably, at gas turbine power plant.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all facets of power plant O&M.
  • Strong background and understanding of large industrial turbines and rotating generation equipment preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use and manage work within a computerized maintenance management system; CMMS and/or Maximo experience preferred.
  • Capable of writing operating procedures, work requests, and purchase requisitions.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical one-lines, logic drawings, technical manuals and Piping & Instrument Drawings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience with Root Cause Analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to successfully interact with management within the fleet as well as other corporate level positions.
  • Superior ability to lead a team.

Working Conditions:

  • Plant site based, frequent field visits.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be willing and able to work a 12-hour rotating shift which may involve extended and/or abnormal work hours and be available for call-ins and working overtime as needed.
  • Walking, reaching, lifting, climbing etc. (Up to 50 pounds).
  • Work with hazardous materials occasionally.

Additional Details:

As this is a safety sensitive position, clearance of a pre-employment drug & alcohol test is required.

Clearance of a pre-employment medical will also be required.
