Capital Power Corporation is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our Engineering team.

As an Instrumentation and Control Engineer you will be part of dynamic group which supports DCS control systems, PLC systems, logic design and troubleshooting, data communications, and instrumentation across the fleet. In this role, you will be involved with developing and executing instrumentation, controls, and automation projects across the Capital Power fleet. This includes ensuring the development, budgeting, detailed design, commissioning and execution of plant projects and engineering support is carried out in a sound, competent, and technically professional manner.

You will contribute to our team by

  • Focusing on the execution instrumentation, control, and automation projects across the Capital Power fleet.
  • Completing DCS, PLC, and HMI evergreening projects.
  • Recommending and completing HMI, control System, and logic changes.
  • Completing the installation of new software solutions for improved plant efficiency.
  • Supporting the SCADA, HMI, and Network development of new renewable energy projects.
  • Providing instrumentation, controls, and automation support to Major Projects.
  • Completing detailed design documentation that includes updating control system network drawings, I/O schematics, loop diagrams, panel layout, panel wiring drawings, and cable terminations as required.
  • Preparing project documentation that includes project justification sheets, work packages and commissioning documents.
  • Preparing preliminary project scope and budget documents for, and making recommendations about, future engineering projects.
  • Specifying and procuring HMI, PLC, network and control system hardware and software for use in engineering projects.
  • Preparing preliminary project scopes and budget documents, and making recommendations about, future engineering projects.
  • Executing and managing projects to approved scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Preparing, negotiating, and managing control system and automation contracts.
  • Participating in commissioning efforts.
  • Providing support to Operations on control system and operational issues.
  • Providing interpretation of codes, regulations, statutes, and standards associated with electrical engineering as required executing assigned projects.
  • Reviewing, understanding, applying, and developing internal engineering guidelines, procedures, and standards.
  • Participating in the peer review process to ensure the responsible practice of engineering at Capital Power, in compliance with the Professional Practice Management Plan.
  • Responding to change with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work activities and objectives.
  • Ensuring the provision of timely and accurate project status and cost information to Project Sponsors and Managers.
  • Working collaboratively and building strong relationships with others.
  • Providing leadership, mentoring and guidance to junior staff including students and EITs.

What you will bring to the role 

Education

  • Completed Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Alberta.
  • Ability to be registered as a Professional Engineer in other Canada jurisdictions.

Experience & Technical Skills

  • 7+ years of engineering experience in Power Generation or Heavy Industry.
  • Experience with control system upgrades, installation, and commissioning.
    • Familiarity with the following would be an asset:
      • PLC’s (Allen Bradley), DCS Systems (GE, ABB, Siemens, and Emerson), HMI software (FactoryTalk, Cimplicity, 800xA, Delta-V).
      • Substation SCADA Design
      • Solar and Windfarm Control System Design
      • OPC, MODBUS, and DNP Communications
      • Serial, Fiber-optic, Ethernet, Co-ax communication networks
      • Troubleshooting of hardware and software applications.
  • DCS and PLC logic design and troubleshooting experience.
  • Familiar with industrial network design and network security design.
  • Project management skills.
  • Strong communications skills (both written and spoken).
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid Office/Work from home position.
  • Periodic travel to generation facilities for shutdown and project support as required.
