Your Opportunity

Capital Power Corporation (CPC) is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our Corporate Compliance & Ethics team.

Under the direction of the Director, Regulatory Compliance and in line with core objectives, the Senior Advisor, Regulatory Compliance supports the management of Capital Power’s Market Compliance Internal Program across our operations and activities in North America.  Specific compliance program accountabilities and oversight include ISO market rules, energy market tariffs, real-time operations requirements, and energy commodity trading monitoring and guidance. This position regularly engages with internal & external stakeholders to support new and changing business, changing regulatory requirements, and provides advisory services and program enhancements. This position also requires an ability to interface with regulators and manage relationships on compliance-related matter on a regular basis.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Monitoring various federal, provincial, state, and local laws and regulations; ensuring that applicable changes to compliance requirements are implemented.
  • Monitoring risk triggers and making recommendations on changes to the Regulatory Compliance Program to minimize compliance risks, as appropriate.
  • Providing key input into the Director, Regulatory Compliance regarding strategy throughout the areas of trading compliance, ISO market rules, and real-time operations.
  • Communicating purpose & applicability to various partner areas.
  • Promoting compliance by providing direction & supporting overall Compliance Programs.
  • Leading investigations on non-compliance events, including conducting root cause analysis, and developing and implementing plans to mitigate future occurrence.
  • Developing operational procedures and providing advice on technical rules to various counterparties, including, but not limited to: Operations, Real-Time Operations, Commercial, and Trading including material and resources for training and education purposes.
  • Engaging internal collaborators to ensure compliance requirements are well-documented, understood and communicated.
  • Serving as the regulator’s point of contact to resolve compliance violations and working directly with the Director, Regulatory Compliance to negotiate settlements on contraventions, as required.
  • Collaborating with the Director, Regulatory Compliance on inquiries from regulatory bodies & place the highest priority on such inquiries.
  • Collaborating with the Director, Regulatory Compliance on implementing changes to monitoring activities, as required.
  • Gathering feedback from internal subject matter experts, as required, and working with management to rollout new requirements to internal stakeholders.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert in an advisory capacity to Capital Power’s on current rules & standards and providing guidance on impact due to change in compliance requirements.
  • Providing recommendations and resolving non-compliance events, as required.
  • Developing mitigation plans on risk areas and / or non-compliance events and communicating mitigation steps to internal stakeholders and regulators.

What you will bring to the role:

Education:

  • Completed Post-secondary Degree in Economics, Business, or Business Law or relevant field.
  • Education equivalency may be considered with relevant experience.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience within a regulated electricity/utility industry, with some experience in regulatory compliance, market operations, or system operation.
  • Equivalencies will be considered.
  • Sound knowledge of provincial electricity market rules & regulations across Canada and the U.S.

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to exercise independent judgement, excellent problem-solving skills, and ability to effectively prioritize.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage several projects in conjunction with ad hoc requests. Project management experience a plus.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to build positive and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to simplify complex issues.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of Allegro and data management skills considered is an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid Office/Work from home position, with possible very minimal travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other offices.
