Your Opportunity

One Temporary (Up to 16 Months) Full Time Position.

Capital Power Corporation is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our IS DBA/Storage team!

Reporting to the Manager of DB/Storage, the IS Intern is accountable for daily operations supporting the databases / Storage of vendor supported applications and custom applications. The scope of work is primarily system support requiring technical expertise in managing database performance, reviewing software and server performance, ensuring the backups run regularly. There may also be opportunities for snowflake administration, ETL, Linux scripting, PowerShell and restoring / validating the database backups. The successful candidate is self-directed with the desire and ability to either work independently and in a collaborative environment.

 

You will contribute to our team by

  • Providing the daily database monitoring and maintenance support services to ensure the databases are in good in performance and healthy.
  • Providing the advanced database administration of applying security patches, implementing version upgrades, modifying, and enhancing code and performing on-going database management tasks.
  • Delivering solutions in a timely manner by overcoming unknowns – independent research or working with the application vendor to deliver results.
  • Adhering to the processes and best practices in IT such as change management, source control, support documentation, security, and access control.
  • Collaborating with our business areas to understand their requirements and translate them into efficient solutions that provide business value.
  • Collaborating with managers within IS to gain best practices on supporting applications to increase efficiency.

What you will bring to the role  

Education:

  • Student in Computing Science, Computer Engineering, or Management Information Systems.
  • Being scheduled to complete at least 3rd year of education will be an asset (approx. 80 credits).

Experience:

  • Experience in supporting and maintaining the SQL and Oracle databases would be an asset but not a requirement.
  • Experience working in a corporate environment would be an asset but not a requirement.
  • Experience with providing end to end solution to resolve application issues.

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Database and tools.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SSRS, SSIS and SSAS and tools would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of query writing using SQL (or equivalent) against a commercial database such as Oracle,
  • Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Unix and scripting would be an asset.
  • Experience in writing scripts (Python, Perl, etc.) would be an asset but not a requirement.
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint would be an asset but not a requirement.
  • Ability to communicate highly technical information in a clear and concise manner to peers and business representatives.
  • Customer relationship skills, demonstrated responsiveness, analytical thinking, problem solving, and planning skills are required.
  • System analysis and design experience; specifically, analysis and programming for high availability corporate systems would be an asset but not a requirement.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid Office/Work from home position.

Additional Details

Hours of Work: 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week

Union: CSU52 (SEP-IT)

Wage: $31.30
